Vintage Baoulé Monkey mask

A large vintage carved wooden and painted Baoulé Gbekre Monkey mask.

This joyful, laughing monkey mask was carved about 70 years ago by the Baule people of Ivory coast.

It is decorated with red ochre and kaolin pigments and is a highly decorative piece of tribal art.

Monkey or Gbekre masks are intimately associated with the Baule people and other representations of monkeys regularly appear in their artistic repertoire.

I’ve lived with him smiling from my wall and his good humour is infectious!
