Rare Vintage articulated Balinese Barong mask

Wonderful and rare example of traditional carved wooden Barong mask from Balinese ceremonial dance-drama performance

Authentic piece which I sourced in Seminyak in 2008

Head comes in two pieces with articulated jaw

Separate ears and horns set into holes

Intricate gold painted mirrored headdress with paper cut-out patterning slots into back of head

Wonderful patina from laquer and pigment aging

Damage to corner to headdress but otherwise excellent vintage condition 

probably mid 20th century 

63 wide x 31 high x 24 deep cms with headdress 

23 wide x 24 deep x 17 high cms wooden head alone without ears or horns 

The Barong is Bali’s own mythical creature and according to folklore, is a symbol of righteousness and justice, health and good fortune.
