Finely carved vintage Baoulé ceremony mask

Finely carved Red Baoulé ceremony mask from Ivory Coast representing Queen Pokou. 

Masks like this, called ‘Kpan’, belong to the family of the ‘Goli masks’. 

It is made of medium-weight wood in perfect Baule style. 

She has classes Baoulé features – an extremely finely carved hairstyle, tribal scarification marks, high eyebrow arches, a typical small, straight nose, and evocative lowered eyes with black pupils.

This beautifully crafted Baoulé piece is from the first half of the 20th century
