Masks like this, called ‘Kpan’, belong to the family of the ‘Goli masks’. It is made of medium-weight wood in perfect Baule style. She has classic Baoulé features – a finely carved hairstyle, tribal scarification marks, high eyebrow arches, a typical small straight nose, and evocative heavy lidded eyes with black pupils. These stylistic attributes are actually a visual vocabulary that suggests what it means to be a good, honorable, respected, and beautiful person in Baule society.
